Apple now dominates the smartwatch market with more than 60 percent share. The reason behind Apple Watch success lies in its exciting features and optimized watchOS. Apple has been improving its wearable operating system since day one, adding new features to the OS while revamping the existing ones.

At this year’s WWDC event, Apple announced watchOS 5, the next version of Apple’s wearable OS after months of anticipation. watchOS 5 brings a significant upgrade to the operating system while retaining what we have always loved about watchOS since the launch day. watchOS 5 really stands out alongside the Apple Watch 4 as it boosts the performance and adds a lot of things that have been demanded for years.

If you now own an Apple Watch 4, then you should know that this thing in your hand is far more capable than the previous models. With that in mind, we made a list of the best new watchOS 5 features you should check out right now.

Before we begin, make sure you now have watchOS 5 installed on your watch. You can update your watch by using the Watch app from your iPhone. To do this, launch the Watch app on your iPhone, then select General and hit Software Update. Now just install any available updates.

  1. Walkie-talkie

Walkie-talkie is one of the biggest additions to watchOS. As the name suggests, the feature lets you quickly connect to your friends and family, and get push-to-talk conversation directly on your wrist. In reality, walkie-talkie is not something new when it comes to Apple devices as it was once a better choice for keeping up with friends. And, in watchOS 5, Apple has revamped the feature and turns into something more useful.

To use Walkie-Talkie, you first need to add your friends to chat with. To do this, open the Walkie-Talkie app on your Watch, then use the Digital Crown to scroll through contacts and select a friend you wish to chat with. Now just simply tap on that person from the list and tap on the card. Once you are done, hit the Talk button to start the conversation.

If you have problems with Walkie-Talkie, then the best shot is to turn off the feature and restart the whole thing. To make sure things run smoothly, your friend needs to have an Apple Watch with watchOS 5 installed.

  1. Siri watch face

With the release of Apple Watch 4, Apple created a brand new watch face that includes up to 8 complications. The best part is that you can customize your watch face to fit your needs and styles. For instance, you can add your friends or family to your watch face so you can connect with them with a simple tap. Or, if you head overseas, you can track different time zones on your watch.

Siri watch face has been part of watchOS for years, but in watchOS 5, the Siri watch face now displays Siri shortcuts that include your favorite apps. The coolest part is that you can choose what shows up on your Siri watch face. To do this, launch the Watch app on your iPhone, then select your Siri watch face and turn on the switch for apps under the Data Sources section

  1. Customize control center

With watchOS 5, you now can customize control center to your liking, something we have been doing for years in iOS. To do this, you simply need to swipe up from the bottom of your watch’s display to access Control Center. After that, scroll down to the bottom and then hit Edit. Now just simply, drag and drop the icons to your preferred locations and press the Digital Crown to save your changes.

  1. Heart features

Smartwatches with heart monitors are becoming more popular and most of them uses the same technology. And, there is no exception to Apple Watch. However, Apple has completely revamped heart rate monitor on Series 4, making it smarter and better. The fourth generation Apple Watch now includes the ability to take an electrocardiogram, giving you a detailed picture of your heart rate.

To do this, open the ECG app on your Watch, then place your finger on the crown for about 30 seconds and you will get an overview of your heart. If your watch detects any irregular heart rate, you will get alerts that go alongside suggested solutions. Besides, your Watch automatically reads your heart rate and displays results on the watch face every time you wear your Watch. This comes in handy as you can easily keep track of your heart’s health.
