Face ID not working? Here is the fix

Face ID

It’s been more than 10 years since the first iPhone was announced to the world. Apple iPhone has changed so much since then and now dominates the smartphone market. The 2017 iPhone X was a great success on the market with millions of units sold every quarter. The newly-released iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are shaping to be giant hits for Apple this year, retaining what we have loved about Apple lineup with a slew of improvements.

In reality, Apple has been adding new features to its iPhone series in recent years. One such feature lies in Face ID. As the name implies, Face ID allows iPhone owners to unlock their devices with a simple glance. In reality, Face ID takes advantage of the X’s True Depth-enabled front-facing camera to map users’ expressions. Face ID has been well received, with praise directed at the stable performance. Apple has been improving its new security measure since the launch day, expanding its usefulness beyond just being able to unlock your device. Face ID is now a bigger deal than you think as it can be used to authorize iTunes and App Store purchases.

However, there are times when Face ID becomes a cause of annoyance as it fails to work. In reality, there have been reported Face ID issues since day one ranging from slow unlock, crashing, or unresponsiveness. And some of them still persist on 2018 iPhone lineup. If you are among people who have been affected by those Face ID issues, then we are here to help.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to fix Face ID not working issue on your iPhone. Note that Face ID is available in select iPhone models including iPhone X, XS, XS Max, and XR. We also recommend you update your iPhone to fix bugs and errors. Apple has begun rolling out iOS 12.1 to compatible devices, so make sure you are up to date.

  1. Disable/enable Face ID

If you now have the latest iOS update on your device, but the problem is still present, the next solution is to disable/enable Face ID. In reality, Face ID is available for face registration as you first set up your iPhone. However, you can easily disable it if you find it annoying or something goes wrong.

Face ID

To disable Face ID, trigger the Settings app from your home screen, then tap Face ID & Passcode and insert your passcode as required. Now just simply turn off the switch next to all options under the Use Face ID For section. Once you are done, turn it back on to see if the problem is fixed.

  1. Reset Face ID

If Face ID still fails to work on your iPhone, then the next step is to perform a reset. Following this method, all of your registered faces and settings will be removed, meaning that you need to set up the whole thing from scratch. To do this, launch the Settings app from your home screen, then hit Face ID & Passcode and tap Reset Face ID.  Once you are done, set up everything again.

Face ID

To set up Face ID, hit Enroll Face in the Face ID section and hit Get Started. Now follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. Note that Face ID works perfectly even when you wear glasses. Make sure you position your face in the frame to register it and remove anything that blocks light. Once everything is set up, check if the problem is dealt with.

  1. Reset all settings

If nothing changes, then try resetting all settings. In reality, doing so will remove all your current settings on your iPhone including Wi-Fi passwords and login details. To do this, open the Settings app, then hit General and tap Reset. Once you are in, tap on Reset All Settings (you may be asked to enter the passcode to proceed) and confirm your action.

Face ID

Once you are done, turn on Face ID on your iPhone and everything should be fine now. If Face ID is still not working, then try adding a new face to Face ID and check if the problem is fixed. If you barely use Face ID, consider disabling it temporarily. To do this, press and hold the Side button and Volume Up/Down at the same time. After that, tap on Cancel and Face ID is now disabled on your device.

If nothing works, then there may be some kind of hardware problem. In this case, bring your iPhone to a local App Store or get Apple support online.
